The Scotch American Company of Farmers was founded in 1772 by a group of inhabitants living in Renfrew and Lanark, Scotland in order to buy land and settle in North America. They sent James Whitelaw and David Allen over to survey land and they purchased half of the town of Ryegate, Vermont in 1773 and began settlement in 1774.
